Place Seminar to highlight the implications of English language dominance in government on speakers of minority languages. Over 50 people attended including Independent Member for Nhulunbuy Mr Yingiya Guyula who also spoke about his experience communicating in English in Parliament when it is not his first language.

Professor Judd outlined the key findings and understandings that emerged from his study of Australian Rules Football as played and organised by the remote community of Papunya, kms North West of Alice Springs. Published online recently in Environmental Research Letters the study found that more than 90 per cent of those surveyed had experienced heat stress and the level of heat stress correlated with population density. The number of people living in Australia will conveniently reach the million mark this month, about the same time that leading demographers, statisticians and researchers gather in Darwin for a national population conference. Charles Darwin University Northern Institute Senior Research Fellow and conference organiser Dr Andrew Taylor said a broad range of trends and issues would be examined during the three-day event, starting 18 July. During the celebrations CDU will recognise the achievements of the many Indigenous women who have made significant contributions to the university.

People attending the Garma Festival in Gulkula, north-east Arnhem Land this year have the opportunity to undertake workshops in language and culture to enhance their experience and learning. College of Indigenous Futures, Arts and Society, with the Australian Indigenous Language Institute, will hold two short intensive Yolngu language and culture courses in July in advance of the festival.
Yolngu Studies Lecturer Brenda Muthamuluwuy said it was important to have an understanding of language and culture when visiting Indigenous communities in the Northern Territory. Linguist Cathy Bow said the workshops, to be held in Darwin, were available to anyone who wanted to become more familiar with Yolngu language and culture. Click here for more details. NT News story. In the past, the Territory has had the highest proportion of non-resident workers of all jurisdictions other than the ACT. We were saddened to hear that Noel Finch a PhD student and friend of Northern Institute passed away this week after a long but heroic battle with cancer. Noel was young at heart and drawing on his deep experience in Indigenous education when he joined the Northern Institute to accomplish his life-long dream to complete his PhD.
He achieved this in December with the successful awarding of his PhD for his thesis. NI staff were thrilled to attend this event held on CDU campus today. The Ambassador was extremely pleased with the visit mentioning Northern Institute was the 'highlight of my visit' to Darwin. Do you use population projections? Decisions based on the future population involve millions of dollars. Northern Institute NI want to know how you use them and how you process the uncertainty. The Population Projection survey forms part of research being undertaken by NI Demographers Dr Tom Wilson and Ms Fiona Shalley and focuses on how well users understand the uncertainty associated with population projections.
Survey purpose: Population projections are estimates of what the population may be in the future. We can't predict the future with certainty so all population projections include forecast error. This is associated with assumptions made about the elements of population change births, deaths and migration , and the models and data used to estimate population change over time. We are interested in whether users of population projections understand the impact of this forecast error, which is often described as 'uncertainty', and whether users consider it in their decision making.
We also want to investigate the best way to communicate the uncertainty to a range of different population projection users. The event has women share stories in Indigenous and immigrant languages with translations into English.
