On the other side of the equation, many people regard the arts as a soft option. The "anyone can do arts" attitude is prevalent among science and maths students. Science subjects are regarded as the difficult areas and incentives are given to take them on.
However, it is as important to be able to write well and think creatively as it is to solve a maths problem or conduct a scientific experiment. Children who live in crowded urban areas often do not have much opportunity to make cubby houses except, perhaps, at school. I have seen a schoolyard cubby transform from a few sticks beside a tree in to a treasured place, complete with tiny kitchen, sitting room and decorated path. This type of play can be intensely engaging and often stays in the memory into adulthood.
